Spring has sprung in the Queen City and if you’re like most people, you have been looking forward to the blooming flowers and foliage for months. Now that the warmer season has arrived, it’s the perfect time to visit the surrounding area’s public gardens, explore the natural areas, and plant your own seeds to grow.
According to the
National Gardening Association
, Charlotte’s frost-free growing season starts March 29 and ends in November. This means Charlotteans have a total of 225 viable days for planting and harvesting. For summer vegetables, now is the perfect time to plant seeds as the soil is near 60 degrees fahrenheit in temperature.
If you would rather go beyond your backyard to see the spring flowers, Charlotte has several popular gardens that are open to the public. One of the most well-known in the Charlotte area is the
Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden
in Belmont. A common spot for weddings and private events as well as public visits, Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden is located on the banks of Lake Wylie. The venue is home to gardens, fountains, a conservatory, and more. Other popular gardens in the area include
Wing Haven
, the
UNC Charlotte Botanical Gardens
, and the
Historic Rosedale Plantation.
Visit any of these gardens for an afternoon of beautiful greenery. To plan your upcoming trip and discover things to do at each garden, visit their websites to learn more.
The natural beauty around Charlotte is not limited to these hundred-acre parks and gardens. You can also appreciate the horticulture around the city in one of the many developed greenways around
Mecklenburg
and the surrounding counties. Right now, there are over 37 miles of greenway throughout the Charlotte area. Popular greenways include the
Anne Springs Close Greenway
, Briar Creek, Little Sugar Creek, Torrence Creek, McAlpine Creek, and many others. For a more extensive look at the city’s greenway options, check out
Charlotte Agenda’s
Complete Guide to Charlotte Greenways.
With three area lakes, countless miles of gardens and natural areas, and several greenways spread across the Charlotte metro, spring is calling for neighbors to get up and enjoy the outdoors. Take a drive down iconic Queens Road, go for a run through one of the many greenways, or visit a botanical garden with friends and family to experience all the beauty Mother Nature has to offer.
